Rock-shield mechanical protection

The rock-shield is a non anti-corrosion coating applied on the anticorrosion coating to provide extra mechanic protection.

Rock-shield is a coating applied on the anticorrosion coating (polyethylene, bitumen, etc.) to provide extra mechanic protection useful in pipe-laying on rocky grounds, or directly in narrow and sand-free ditches, with greater respect for the environment and with greater economy.
Mainly suitable for onshore use, it is used for both gas pipelines and aqueducts. We apply it according to our internal procedures and customer specifications.

SIZE RANGE

Rock-shield coating from DN 3” (88.9 mm) to DN 24” (610.0 mm) in lengths from 6.0 m to 13.5 m
For larger diameters, typically from DN 26 "(660.4 mm) to DN 64" (1625.0 mm), a rock-shield plus version was developed, with higher thicknesses and reinforced with steel mesh, to counteract the high weights of the pipes, obtaining an even more resistant mechanical protection.

IN-DEPTH

Rock-shield is a coating obtained by wrapping the anticorrosion coated pipe, with a glass fiber fabric embedded in cement mortar, to form a designed layer, which after proper curing becomes hard and resistant but flexible at the same time.
The useful life span of a pipeline can be maintained or increased, thanks to the validity and integrity of the anti-corrosion coating applied on (bitumen, polyethylene, FBE, etc.). We pay particular attention in the production and control of the pipes and the installer will have to do likewise during the pipe-laying and the backfilling of the ditches. For this reason, it’s necessary to prepare a bed of specific dimensions in ditch, partly filled with fine sand, free of crushed stone or roughness of any kind which, with the weight of the pipe and the pressure above it, could over the time, penetrate the coating and create a corrosion starting point.
Finally, it is necessary to cover the pipe again with fine sand and complete the backfilling.
This solution is often neither simple nor cheap to achieve, especially in mountains, on rocky grounds or in steep stretches, where it is difficult to carry out large excavations, bring the sand, distribute it correctly, or even in areas where the environment impact is great, such as in parks and natural reserves.
Rock-shield is an alternative solution, designed and tested by us, which allows you to lay the pipe directly in the ditch, which can be made of the minimum width, without sand bed, using the same excavation material for the backfilling, with greater respect for the surrounding environment and with greater economy.
The aforementioned requirements have made the rock-shield coating the winning choice in important natural gas pipelines built in the Abruzzo National Park, on the Della Laga Mountains and in other mountain locations during the construction of hydroelectric plants.
